Work Package 2: ZONNELIED – State of the Arts and User’s Requirements

Zonnelied vzw is a national NGO working in Belgium for the support of people with an intellectual disability, multiple disabilities and dual diagnosis.

This WP aimed at identifying the needs  of the different stakeholder’s through the  Appreciative Inquiry Methodology.

The work package leader Zonnelied has organized a two day training on Appreciative Inquiry on 16th and 17th of February 2012 for partners of the Consortium and has also distributed a handbook on how to use Appreciative Inquiry with questions concerning quality of life of people with ID (complex health and social care needs for people with ID; skills to plan and deliver appropriate care models; person centered support etc..) adopted to the different stakeholders: users, family and staff.

The focus groups allowed direct involvement of the people with ID and their families within the formulation of the training and have represented great opportunity for people with ID to become direct participants within EU projects.

Each partner has been responsible for carrying out 2 focus groups involving users, family carers, professionals using the AI methodology. Each partner has produced an Appreciative Progress Report which has been analyzed and assembled within final report of all the focus groups conducted by the partnership.

This operation of data collection represented a very important step of the project, considering the fact that the results of FG were used as the base for the creation of the training modules for the professional supporting people with ID.

From the analysis of  the definitive report of the focus group,  three main tendencies emerged:

  • The auto determination in the way of living (whatever their age is)
  • The material means for minimum comfort and a life with dignity
  • The need for social relationships
